Strict Proposals on Hate Crimes Await Approval

Site: http://cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1999/07/23/hate.crimes/

Two new measures to aid in prosecuting hate crimes were included by the Senate as part of a large spending bill for the Justice Department. In the wake of several hideous hate crimes, the President proposed a change in hate-crime legislation by expanding the categories to sexual orientation, gender, and disability. A second measure, sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch, extends federal jurisdiction to hate crimes committed after crossing state lines. These measures were part of 34 ammendments added to the Justice Department's spending bill. News of the proposals came through the AP Friday, along with an announcement from the President that he hoped the House would "follow the lead." The spending bill will be settled in fall.
