This site, Artindia.com, was first launched in December of 1998 and is maintained by Indian artists. The section on Indian music is classified into two categories: the Hindustani and the Carnatic. Clear descriptions of these two classical genres are found within their respective sections, and will tell you about more than just the geographical origins. In addition, you can explore each genre by practitioners of the main instruments that are used in bringing the compositions to life. For instance, the sitar is found in the section for Hindustani, whereas the mridangam is in the Carnatic. There are links to the websites of some practitioners, which will give you more insight into authentic Indian classical music.
