Lucent: what's the problem?

Lucent, AT&T, Bell, Western Electric--what a tangled web those phone companies weave! This interesting (and sardonic) article from Connect! e-magazine traces the path that we now know as Lucent technologies from it's humble beginnings in the early 1900s to today, following the various levels of success (or lack thereof) the phone company has enjoyed in its numerous incarnations. Don't be surprised if you find yourself constructing a makeshift scorecard to keep track of who bought, sold, and renamed who--it's downright confusing, even if you're a pro in this field.
