a beat of jazz history

Site: http://www.dla.utexas.edu/depts/ams/Jazz/Jazz3/Noferi.htm

The works of beat authors Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg were very intertwined with jazz back in the '40s and '50s. By using jazz as a musical model, each was able to break out of the mold created by those whom they had been emulating. In this essay, found on the UT at Austin site, Mark Noferi relates the way jazz influenced these writers and how they applied the model to their work. The use of jazz as a metaphor provided a different and unique way of celebrating jazz, and evidently spurred much creativity in these two artists. A rather long read, but an interesting study.
