World Pride Rome 2000

On March 1999, Francesco Rutelli, Rome's mayor, proclaimed his city ready to host both the Year 2000 Catholic Jubilee AND World Pride Roma 2000. On August 10, the Vatican announced it was unlikely to condone the gay event (see http://www.tri.org/news98/N990810.htm). Regardless, opening ceremonies are expected to begin on July 1 at Pride Park for World Pride Roma 2000. Simultaneously, and in full view of thousands of Catholic pilgrims from around the world, the International Lesbian and Gay 20th World Conference will also take place. This website describes the celebration and its history, provides current news items, and has a gay guide to Rome. From July 1-8, fashion shows, parties, concerts, art exhibits, movie premiers, and theatrical performances will fill the days and nights. A World Pride March celebrating freedom and diversity takes place Saturday, July 8, passing through the major streets of the historical center. The events culminate on July 9th with an outdoor ice cream party at the gay beach, Capocotta. Being gay is so delicious, isn't it?
