In the spirit of Valentine's Day, this editor would like to draw your attention to this excellent overview of the Romantic era, provided by the Internet Public Library. The page begins with a general overview of the compositional motifs that characterized this period (the symphonic poem, concert overtures, Bel canto opera), and goes on to profile the composers who contributed most significantly to the development of Romantic music: Rossini, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Liszt, among others.
