Navajos lose a battle, but not the war

Talk about getting egg on your face: Interior Secretary Donald Hodel recently received a severe dressing down for colluding with a coal company in order to shortchange the Navajo nation. Apparently, the largest remaining Indian tribe in the U.S. gets most of its funds from royalties that other companies pay to remove coal from Navajo land. Hodel, while admittedly not obliged to go to bat for the tribe, certainly didn't need to take deliberate action to prevent the Navajo from commanding profitable royalty percentages--perplexing behavior for someone who used to head the Christian Coalition, wouldn't you say?
