You see them flash on the screen before most programs--a rating like TV Y7 FV or TV 14 VSL. But what exacly does all that gibberish mean and how are you supposed to use it? Here's a site dedicated to answering these questions and to explaining how the federally mandated V-Chip can be used to help you decide what types of programs your children can watch. There are also great tips on how to make television viewing both positive and productive for your children. One interesting fact I discovered here is that BET (Black Entertainment Television) does not rate its programs at all, and NBC does not use the content labels to indicate if a show contains sex, violence, or adult language.
