The deal that sent Ken Griffey Jr. from the Seattle Mariners to the Cincinnati Reds sent shockwaves through the rotisserie league community, but did it do the same in sports management offices around baseball? Maybe not, according to this eye-opening piece from USA Today. Agents who were prepared to use the contract of the best player in baseball as a yardstick in their future negotiations appear undaunted by the fact that Junior took much less than he was worth to play for the Reds. Instead of using Griffey's deal as a standard for their own superstars' deals, they will argue that his was a "special case" and that teams should not use his contract as model. Something tells me the Red Legs' new centerfielder isn't going to be the most popular guy in the room at the next player's union meeting.
