The Man in the Hat

This past weekend was a sad one for sports fans, like me, who grew up in the '70s. Not only did we lose Charles Schulz, the beloved creator of Peanuts, but Tom Landry, football's imperturbable "man in the hat" who patrolled the sidelines as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys for what seemed like an eternity. I remembered Landry as an icon of my youth, but was intrigued to read about what an innovator he was as well. In this piece for ESPN.com, former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski takes a look at the late coach's X's and O's legacy. A lot of the offensive sets that we take for granted today, like the shotgun and the spead formation, originated in the mind of Landry.
