Quake III: Arena

For years id Software has held total control over the first-person shooter market. After Quake II, id announced that all future games would be multiplayer-only, which shocked the world--but which also led to Unreal Tournament and the future Team Fortress 2. But how does the originator, Quake III: Arena, stack up? It gives you a lot of eye candy, including curved surfaces, which none of the other engines can match. So graphically it's great, and gameplay is tres cool. The only minus to the program is the lack of VARIETY. Quake III offers deathmatching and Capture-the-Flag--and that's it. Unreal Tournament, on the other hand, offers the innovative Assault and Domination modes, as well as the others. However, many people love deathmatching, and that's all. And Quake III is still the king of deathmatching; there's no doubt about that. And the graphics and weapons balance add to an immersive environment. So if you liked deathmatching in Quake II, you're going to like this...or maybe even love it, with the improvements to the graphics engine.
