Mudcat Cafe

Site: http://www.mudcat.org

OK, blues fans. This is your site. No doubt about it. If your vocabulary and record collection includes 12 bar blues, Robert Johnson, Woody Guthrie, Celtic harps, Pete Seeger, Son House-- well, you better check Mudcat Cafe out. It's a non-profit outfit dedicated to preserving, enhancing, and preaching the gospel of blues and folk. You'll find an outstanding kids site, great chat rooms, excellent free downloads, the E-Muzine (their on-line mag) and a great music store. My favorite component, however, is a massive database of folksongs and lyrics. Just type in a phrase and get pointed to not only the song you were thinking of, but very possibly a passel of other tunes that are related to, were born from, or sired by the song in question. And you can download the entire database for free (but consider a membership!) This is truly a first class site worthy of an afternoon's exploration.
