How long will the MP3 format be able to withstand challenges from the other newer, perhaps better, formats? There are already a number of audio coding methods that produce smaller files with equal or better audio quality than MP3. In this week's Music Dish column, Jay Lickfett takes a look at the contenders: AAC, available from Dolby Laborotories; ATRAC3, from Sony; ePAC, from Lucent Technologies; Liquid Audio; RealAudio; VQF, from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone; and Windows Media Audio, from Microsoft.
