Criminalistic Standards

The American Board of Criminalistics (ABC) was incorporated in 1989 to facilitate the "development of an examination designed to assess the overall competence of certification candidates." Students who pass the exams receive a recognized Certificate of Professional Competency in Criminalistics. For those in the legal arena, it means a wide range of expert witnesses certified in disciplines such as "Fire Debris, Forensic Biology, Trace Evidence, and Drug Identification." The ABC Web site is a source of information about these certificates and the standards they set for each area of expertise. The site is a great start in establishing criteria of credible witnesses.
