MGM Grand Casino Opens in Detroit

Detroit's first casino opened yesterday in what used to be an IRS building. It is hoped that the MGM Grand Detroit will revitalize the city’s blighted downtown area with $225 million worth of Las Vegas-style glitz. Visitors were already lined up around the block at midday, long before the Art Deco gaming floor opened at 4:30 p.m.. The five-story, gold-and-cream building has two floors packed with 2,370 slot and video poker machines and 83 gaming tables. The casino is decorated to look like a 1930s theater lobby, with glass chandeliers, gold statues and black-and-white photos of Hollywood stars.
