Delfator of the Faith? Kevin Smith Begs to Differ

In the 8/1/99 Arts and Leisure section of the New York Times, Dave Kehr reviews "DOGMA" and speaks with the film's director, Kevin Smith, at its world premier at the Cannes Internation Film Festival. Smith discuusses his religious upbringing and how it influenced "DOGMA," which, according to Smith, is "intended as a love letter to both faith and God Almighty." Smith's provocative film has not swooned religious conservatives, however. After reading a list of depictions he found offensive in the film, William A. Donohue, president of the Catholic Leauge for Religious and Civil Rights, responded to Smith's remark by saying "this sounds more like hate mail than a love letter." Noel Munier
