The support that Java offers for images leaves a lot to be desired. Sure you can read in GIF and JPEG, but what about TIF, PNG, PCX, BMP, and all the other variations out there? And don't even get me started on writing these file formats out to disk. That's why JIMI was written. JIMI is a fully featured class library for handling images, and was formerly produced by Activated Intelligence. Sun bought the product, and is now making it available for free. This is a great download, whether you're writing applets or applications.
