The Naked Violin

You could easily call this site the x-ray(ted) violin--for what they do is unique: using CT scans to see inside the instruments that have moved us for so many years, researchers are able to see the violin like it has never been seen before. And now you can see some of the pictures, too. The site is fascinating for string players who want to get a better perspective on what their instruments are all about. Unfortunately, they do not go into the scientific explinations about the acoustic properties of the different instruments, but they have scanned Amati, Guarneri and Stradivari violins, as well as modern violins to see the differences...and there are differences. There are also some very good links to other sites on this page, and it is very easy to navigate. Just for the opportunity of seeing x-rays of a violin, this site is worth checking out; it is a novelty, but can give you plenty of food for thought as to how your own instrument works and how you work with it.
