Recording artists can hit major hurdles in the music industry if they choose to chronicle gay issues within their music. As a result of their integrity, they may be forced to promote and sell their music exclusively through gay bookstores, on live tours, by using the Internet, or simply through word of mouth. The Outvoice Out Top 40 music chart may change all that. It reflects music by gay, lesbian, bi, and trans artists who do not--or cannot--get attention on mainstream charts. The ranking, which is viewer supported and gets its numbers from weekly voting by readers, focuses more on a genre of culture than on the type of music involved. Voting rules include: eligible songs are those performed by an openly gay, lesbiian, or trans artist or having lyrics of specific gay-interest; artists rumored to be gay are not eligible until they publicly come out of the close; and bands with at least one openly gay member are eligible.
