Immigrant Welfare Hope Dashed

Dashing the hopes of pro-immigrant groups everywhere and in the city of Chicago in particular, the U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a challenge to the Welfare Reform Act. The 1996 act ended food stamp, disability and a myriad of other benefits to legal immigrants who are not citizens. Chicago, as one of the original plaintiffs, argued that the law violated the constitutional right to equal protection under the law. But the appeal fell on--if not deaf ears--mute Justices. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal without comment.
