John Elder Gallery of Contemporary Decorative Art

Site: http://www.johnelder.com

This is a good example of a wide-ranging commercial art site that is well-organized, well-designed, interesting, stimulating at times, and one that offers views of contemporary creations by more than three dozen selected artisans involved in glass, ceramics and studio furniture. According to Elder: "These artists share the conviction that art should be inspired, finely executed-and an everyday affair." The gallery presents a year-round variety of exhibits, both online and at its location in New York City (529 W. 20th St.). The artists and images of their modernistic works are accompanied by brief bios, educational backgrounds, past exhibitions, honors and awards, and notices of media reviews. The site also offers information, images and pricing in secondary markets for works by the artists, along with dates for auctions, group shows and future exhibitions. For instance, there is a preview of new works by four gallery artists whose solo exhibitions begin September 10. One of the artists, Rod McCormick, uses computer-aided design software to create steel-mesh forms. The result is fascinating.
