Top » Music: Classical & OperaWhat Does Classical Mean, Anyway?Site: http://www.crosswinds.net/~musichistory/hist/index.htmlClassical music is easier to recognize than it is to define. Despite the fact that we often use the term definitively, it threatens to be more confusing than enlightening. That's because classical neither refers to a general style of music or a particular period in history. If you are keen to clarify the meaning of classical in order to heighten your understanding of the music, then this is the site for you. It goes to great lengths to show that it is not enough to distinguish classical from contemporary. It reminds us that classical music was contemporary music until recent time. It does this by dividing the classical into distinct musical styles and periods. This history provides a narrative divided into different headings and chapters. The aim is to orientate our thinking and administer our understanding. It underlines the fact that the classical is merely an intersection--historical paths lying across or passing through one another. Each path offers different routes, views and destinations. Like most intersections, then, approach with caution to ensure continued passage. Fri, 07 Apr 2000 18:02:20 -0700 Submitted by: Steven Aoun
