AUT: New figures on faculty contracts

The Association of University Teachers (UK) reports that part-time and term-contractors now comprise a horrifying 78% of the faculty in British universities. This is up from 41% at this time last year. In 1997, the figure for American academics was placed at 58%. Meanwhile, in the Chronicle of Higher Education http://www.chronicle.com/weekly/v45/i49/49a01402.htm , it is noted that the most recent data (from 1992) shows that fully one third of all new hires are new academics (i.e. less than seven years in the profession). Unfortunately, it is also noted that a third of the new academics were in non-tenurable jobs.
