MAX BASEBALL

Site: http://www.Maxbaseball.com

All that is good and bad about Internet audio reporting is displayed at Max Baseball, an ambitious site produced in conjunction with AOL. The good is Max's coup in recruiting Houston Astros manager Larry Dierker to provide not only weekly print columns, but also regular "Manager's Minute" audio reports. Dierker was a broadcaster before taking charge of the Astros, and his background shows in his polished delivery of the audio report. It also sounds like Dierker actually cares about providing something other than clichés, and isn't afraid to offer an opinion. Less polished--that is to say "painful"-- are the efforts of some of the correspondents of each of the 30 Major League teams, who offer daily audio reports. Most are sportswriters, and it's clear they aren't all made to cross over into radio or television. Text reports come in tandem, however, so the reporters do get to do what they do well. The rest of the site provides sufficient basics--fantasy reports, features, etc.--but Dierker's regular appearances are the highlight of Max Baseball.
