MICHAELANGELO'S "DAVID" AND ANCIENT ROMAN DWELLING

Site: http://www.eat.com/architecture/david.html

Lovers of Italian art and architecture will discover Michelangelo’s famous statue, "David," and "The House of Panza" in Pompeii here. Read about Michelangelo’s emphasis on detail and his ability to make life- like statues of the human body. The muscular and nude David, nineteen feet tall, was one of the most impressive marble statues of the Renaissance. Placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio, David became a patriotic symbol of Florence in its struggle to overcome the odds and gain independence from the Italian republic. The House of Panza, an ancient dwelling, or "domus," is representative of the houses of wealthy residents of ancient Rome. On the outside, the domus was unrecognizable because it was surrounded by shops, while the home's entrance was somewhere in the middle of the block. The ornate interior is described room-by-room.
