RED CHINA (AND WHITE AND ROSE TOO)

Site: http://www.gluckman.com/ChinaWine.html

China is the last great market to discover wine--and the Chinese are learning fast. On a recent visit to Beijing, I enjoyed good wines made in China. American journalist Ron Gluckman uses his web page to relate the story of Huadong winery in Shandong Province in northeastern China. He tells the fascinating tale of how a typhoon destroyed 40,000 newly planted vines, and of the bankruptcy caused by replanting. Success was eventually achieved, but too late for the visionary who founded the winery. He was Michael Parry, a Hong Kong-based English wine merchant whose ashes are now buried under the Chardonnay vines he planted. Mr. Lin, the successor he trained, annually produces up to 200,000 cases of award-winning wine, which quickly sell out. Production is expected to be increased to one million cases. This is an inspirational story of success against the odds.
