"The Recipe for long life"

Site: http://www.nytimes.com/library/national/science/082799sci-week.h

Unfortunately, the recipe seems to be EAT LESS. Alternatively, vigorous exercise on a regular basis may do the trick. Not exactly what those who love food and lounging about wanted to hear. Research on mice shows that those who were fed a calorie-restricted diet (at least 25% less than normal intake) lived longer than those on a normal diet. This article also indicates vigorous exercise, and possibly moderate exercise, appears to lead to a reduced risk of life-threatening illness, and may prolong life. Now, with a gene expression chip, aging research is exploring changes on the cellular level, in hopes of finding ways to more efficiently measure anti-aging strategies. This technique would enable more research to be conducted on humans as opposed to mice, and hopefully tell us if anti-aging drugs work or not, as well as expedite the progress made in the pursuit to enhance longevity.
