HUNTING FOR PIGEONS

Site: http://www.fieldandstream.com/gundogs/fspigeonhole.html

Training a dog to hunt birds requires practice and patience, as demonstrated by shooting dog trainer Larry Allen. All you need is a large backyard with high grass, a ten-foot pigeon pole with a line tied at its top, and a live pigeon to practice with over and over again. The dog, controlled by a check cord, requires many, many, many opportunities to find, point, and hold down the bird with lots of repetition and consistent results. The dog must learn to be obedient and to stay with you, without chasing the bird when it flies away. When the dog is ready, then it's time to practice in the wild. The backyard training can be continued for introducing new situations. At the bottom of the article, you'll find a link to a forum for gun dog owners where questions and concerns can be answered.
