Persistence pays off for English Ph.Ds

Site: http://chronicle.merit.edu/daily/99/09/99090301n.htm

Part I of a study published in the Chronicle claims that 75% of 1982-85 British Humanities Ph.Ds "who sought" academic jobs gained them. But the report omits vital information to paint this rosy picture: (1) how many - in numbers - actually sought academic jobs (probably very few)? (2) are the successes male or female? (3) do they have Ph.Ds from elite or mainstream universities? (4) which universities? The report notes that biochemists were unemployable, academically or otherwise, until they had completed lengthy post-docs. No doubt this pattern will infiltrate the Humanities in due course.
