CUTTING TO THE K

This is a must-read article in a year when forecasters are predicting a new record in home run production. Because its opposite, the hallmark of great pitching, the nemesis of all hitters, the strikeout, is likewise on the rise, and phenomenally so. In an astutely-written feature piece, Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune observes the trend, compares the strikeout numbers of current players with those of past great sluggers and singles hitters alike, then digs into the matter with some pretty good sources to find out what's up besides the number of Ks. Don Baylor, Jeff Bagwell, Damon Buford, Eric Young, and Mark Grace step up to give their views from both a hitting and pitching perspective. This article is smack dab in the middle of an excellent site: the Chicago Tribune's sports page, featuring the Cubbies and the White Sox, with features untold.
