P.A.L.O. is the Palo and Lukumi Organization of America. One of the purposes of this organization is to provide information about the belief system of Santeria, also know as Lukumi. Santeria originated with the Yoruba people, many of whom were taken as slaves to Cuba and Brazil. Yoruba priests called the spirits "orishas," which translated as santos in Spanish, hence the Yoruba traditions in Cuba became Santeria. Santeria recognizes a supreme being, Olodumare, as the personification of fate or destiny. The relationship between each individual and his/her spirit is of particular importance.
