Bridge Champion to Battle Computers

Ten years ago, millionaire bridge champion Zia Mahmood made a $1.6 million bet that he could beat any computer at his favorite game. On Sept. 3-4 in London, Mahmood will set out to battle seven bridge-playing computers to show that despite the relentless advance of technology, man can still play his cards better than machine. "I see myself as a latter-day Lancelot defending man's superiority against this encroaching high-tech menace," explains Mahmood. But his ten-year-old bet is no longer standing. "I rate my chances at 50-50, but somebody has got to try to keep these infernal machines in their place."
