RIGHT SIDE OF THE ANDES

Site: http://www.argentinewines.com/english/default.htm

Sometimes a grape, such as Malbec, makes better wine when transplanted from its homeland. Argentina makes a wonderfully fruity, complex red wine from Malbec, which is rather ordinary in its French homeland in Cahors and Bordeaux. But I was surprised to learn that the wine might not taste the same if I bought it in Argentina. This Argentine Wines site says most winemakers produce two styles of wine, one for the home market and one for export. Apparently locals prefer their wines very low in tannins, fruit and acidity and they like to smell old, damp wood. That's not for me. I'll continue to buy exported Argentine wines and read about them on this site, which has comprehensive information in Spanish and English.
