NEWS ACROSS THE POND

My local PBS station broadcasts the BBC World News every weeknight, right after Jim Lehrer's "Newshour." What I find most fascinating about the BBC's broadcast is the array of international content that never makes it to American television screens or even our most distinguished newspapers. The BBC News website provokes similar reactions. It has a decidedly more global perspective than the American media. Two cases in point: in-depth coverage of events in countries we habitually ignore; and translations of the site content into Japanese, Arabic, Russian, and other languages just one click away from the home page. If you've ever doubted the gap between British and American sensibilities, check out the sports and entertainment coverage and the schedule of BBC radio and television "programmes."
