Timor, so small yet suddenly in the news

Timor has been in the news recently, and this economist article provides a good overview of the history leading up to the current state of affairs. It's easy to see why the problems up till now have gone unnoticed, but the question with this conflict and several others is what catalyst brings it to the media and the world's attention at this particular moment, as opposed to another.
