THE VOLVO AROUND-THE-WORLD RACE

On September 8, 1973, 17 boats went under the starter's gun for the first Whitbread around-the-world race. At almost 27,000 miles, through some the world's most treacherous oceans, the race became the pinnacle of deep-water yacht racing. Now, 27 years later and with a new sponsor, preparations are under way for the 2001/2002 race.
