THREE THOUSANDS YEARS OF HISTORY IN ONE WEBSITE

Site: http://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/History_n2/a.html

HyperHistory provides an overview of the past 3,000 years of world history through an elaborate system of graphics and links. The site's organizing principle is the "synchronoptic" concept, defined as "seeing at the same time." Timelines, "lifelines" (biographical timelines), maps, and other graphics represent events, both sequentially within particular cultures and simultaneously across cultures. The resulting images highlight the connections between one civilization and another during a given historical period. Color coding distinguishes various cultural developments, such as humanities, technology, and religion. Brief textual summaries appear when the visitor clicks on specific points within the graphics, and numerous links to other Web resources supplement and enhance the site content. Although I found the organization and color coding complex and tough to adjust to, the effort was worthwhile. Return visits to HyperHistory are certainly in my future.
