Buchanan taking Assaults Personal

Site: http://www.gopatgo2000.org/pma-99-0921-letter.html

Pat Buchanan is firing back at critics who have attacked his book about American Foreign Policy, where Buchanan suggested the United States had no interest in fighting Germany after 1940 in World War II. In this response, Buchanan engages in the Monday Morning Quarterbacking of Churchhill and FDR. His responses are not implausible, but they are in some cases improbable or impractical. For instance, letting Germany take care of Russia might have prevented the Cold War with the Soviet Union, but might it have lead to a cold war with a large Germany that stretches across Western Europe. Buchanan's second-guessing of the U.S. involvement in WW's I and II is absurd. He has been in politics long enough to know that this is not a good idea. We cannot re-fight WWII, so what's the point of bring it up? He's alienated a lot of veterans with this position. Buchanan points out quite fairly that he was taken out of context a number of times. He is getting visibly angry about people's criticism. Buchanan's response to the criticism is paranoid, and somewhat Clintonesque. But to be fair, being attacked as a Nazi-lover for expressing what you to believe to be legitimiate opinions is not something that most politicians have to deal with, so I understand his frustration. Still, Buchanan has been in politics long enough to know not to write something so stupid as suggesting we didn't have an interest in WWII, so he deserves what he gets.
