RUSSIAN RELIGION AND INDIAN CONVERSIONS

Site: http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/russian/s1a.html

This is a very interesting site that documents the history of the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska and Russian attempts to Christianize Native Americans such as the Tlingit, Aleuts, and Eskimos. The site is largely intended for scholars and students and provides numerous archival documents, letters, manuscripts, and photos, all available in their original form. If you can read Russian, you can view original church documents describing the efforts to convert the Native Americans and the various successes and failures. The site is organized historically and thematically, with each page giving a brief topic description, followed by links to the various documents. Everything contained in the site is well documented and provides ample means to conduct further research on any of the topics presented. Although seemingly intended for scholarship, this site would also hold interest for anyone interested in the often complicated work of missionaries.
