BASICS OF WINE TASTING

Site: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/9567/98mar25.html

It seems impossible to write a "how-to" article about a process so dependent on sensory information, but this simple and practical guide really does an excellent job. Here's all the information you need to understand how wine is evaluated on appearance, bouquet, and taste. What does the color of a white wine tell you about where it comes from? What aromas might indicate that a bottle of wine has "turned" and needs to be discarded? What is acidity, and how do you evaluate the tannin in red wines? All these basics are outlined here. The author is quick to mention that in addition to this type of rudimentary instruction, one needs "a whole lot of practice" to become a really skilled wine taster--but that's the fun part, isn't it?
