Technological Medicine

Site: http://www.shrinershq.org/WhatsNew/technology4-00.html

Sometimes technology can do what all the pills and liquid medicines in the world can't. This article focuses on two children who, with the help of the Shriners, are utilizing computers and wheelchairs to communicate and participate in the world around them. At the age of 6, 12-year-old Francisco lost his voice and mobility to meningitis and, for years, was carried around by his parents. Now equipped with a wheelchair, he is learning to use a computer to voice his thoughts. Carrissa lost her feet and hands to meningococcal disease and now uses software games to learn necessary verbal skills. Technological medicine is enabling them to become more independent and self-confident.
