Recently released, Clusterball could easily become one of the biggest games played online. Made by Swedish designers Daydream Software, the game plays a lot like Quake--in the air. The object is to fly around the beautifully rendered 3D environments and collect balls to redeem for points, all the while evading other players who will be trying to rob you of your loot via some fiendish weapons. The game has some of the best Net code ever, and I experienced no lag whatsoever while using a 56K modem (unlike most online games, where only those with broadband connections will have a chance to win).
