A WIN-WIN SITUATION

Senior Writer Scott Miller of SportsLine.com contends that trades sometime help both teams. The "White Flag" deal of 1997 between the White Sox and the Giants, Miller says, is a case in point. Although Chicago's decision to trade away three pitchers to get San Francisco's Mike Caruso and some minor leaguers was considered general manager Ron Schueler's folly at the time, the White Sox today are on the verge of taking the AL Central division title. Their acquisition of Bobby Howry, Keith Foulke, and Lorenzo Barcelo has energized the team's pitching. In San Francisco, they also look back at the deal as a wise decision. Assistant general manager Ned Colletti believes that the trade helped the Giants win their division in 1997, stay competitive over the last three years, and obtain a new stadium this season.
