EMERGENCY HEARING ON 'CARNIVORE'

This CNN lead technology article concerns the EPIC (Electronic Privacy Information Center) organization, who has filed for an emergency Freedom of Information Act hearing concerning the FBI's recently disclosed e-mail monitoring system named Carnivore. The concern is the lack of oversight in the development and use of this tool in relation to the 4th Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure. The FBI has made no comment. With this federal system disclosure and subsequent debate, the computer security and privacy realm has moved to prime time.
