TARGET ADS EARN "UNDIVIDED ATTENTION"

Site: http://slate.msn.com/Code/Moneybox/Moneybox.asp?Show=8/7/00&idMe

Rob Walker describes and grades two "irresistible" TV ads by Target department store that can be downloaded and viewed with the latest version of Windows Media Player. First appearing in print ads, the TV spots depict Pop Art images of attractive women in fashionable surf shorts, stretch pants, bathing suit, and flood pants, along with everyday, supermarket-brand items. The idea is, Walker explains, to show that "stylish-yet-sensible" customers can buy both staple products and name-brand designer items at the store. The combination of graphic images, color, motion, and music make the ads effective, Walker thinks, giving them "a solid A."
