Top » Women's HealthUNNECESSARY HYSTERECTOMIESSite: http://www.medserv.dk/health/2000/03/20/story01.htmOver 500,000 hysterectomies are performed each year on women who are diagnosed with fibroid tumors. This is done on the questionable premise that fibroids lead to cancer. Thus, many women are undergoing what may be unnecessary surgery. In this article on MedServ medical news, Dr. Nelson Teng, Chief of Gynecologic Oncology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, tells us that it is very rare that fibroid tumors become cancerous. Fibroids cause discomfort, bleeding and pain. When a woman is diagnosed, she should ask for a second opinion along with diagnostic tests to rule out cancer, rather than undergo the trauma and possible after effects of serious surgery based on a "maybe."
