NZ HAVEN: TIRITIRI MATANGI ISLAND

A ferry's ride away from Auckland on New Zealand's North Island can be found Tiritiri Matangi Island. Since farming ceased and revegetation on this island began in 1971, it has been turned into one very lush nature preserve, in which indigenous plant species from throughout New Zealand flourish. Aside from the complete elimination of the Polynesian rat, the Kiore, from the island, the island has become famous as a haven for indigenous birds from all over the archipelago, some of which were nearly extinct.
