Origin of an Urban Legend?

Site: http://cardhouse.com/rocketcar

I'm sure we've all heard the story about the guy who strapped a rocket booster to his car and tried to make a land speed record. If you haven't, I can tell you the end result...apparently, local police later found a greasy spot on the side of a cliff, and the story unfolded from there. The tale even got the unknown and unfortunate driver a Darwin Award for his brilliant plan. Well, urban myths and legends, no matter how outrageous they may be, got their start from some shred of truth. In "The Origin of the Rocketcar-in-the-Cliff" web page, the author claims to have been responsible for starting this paticular urban legend. The page is all text with a few crude diagrams, and is very, very, VERY long, but is well worth the time it takes to read. WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
