Moon shot

One of the lasting images of the second half of the 20th century (after Neal Armstrong's "One small step...") is Alan Shepard's 6-iron shot on the moon. This short article, from the Retro Future site, delves into that famous golf shot. You'll learn that it was actually two shots; Shepard duffed the first one, but surely connected on the second shot (it stayed in the air for over 30 seconds). Only a few people knew of Shepard's secret plan, and he promised the mission director that it wouldn't interfere with the work at hand. Shepard got his wish, and in the process delighted millions of golf fans back on earth. To this day, the modified lunar scooper/6-iron is still the top attraction at the US Golf Association Museum and Library.
