It's the Offense, Stupid!

Allen Barra criticizes NBA Commissioner David Stern's emphasis on national TV ratings and suggests that more attention should be placed on the sport itself. Yes, ratings have dropped significantly, Barra acknowledges, but Americans as a whole just don't watch anything as much as they used to, he points out. Unlike Major League Baseball and the NFL, the NBA's appeal is eroding on the local level--that's the problem, Barra believes. Stop looking for another Michael Jordan, Barra says, and focus on improving the quality of the offense. Young, inexperienced millionaires who can't shoot need better instruction. And it's not just the rookies who need more shooting practice, Barra adds. Finally, who will win the NBA title this season? Barra projects that Orlando, or anyone else in the East, will get creamed by the Lakers, Portland, or his favorite, San Antonio.
